About MCS

McGill Choral Society (MCS) is a non-profit student organization dedicated to making great music! One of the largest student groups on the McGill campus, MCS gives members the chance to explore and enjoy the experience of making music together. While MCS is officially a club of the Student Society of McGill University, it is also open to students of other universities and members of the general public. The executive of the choir is comprised of McGill students, with a subcommittee of non-student members who assist the main executive.

Currently, MCS has an average membership of 140 people and we perform to audiences of 1000-1500 people. Each year we perform two major choral works, one in our Fall concert at the end of November and one in our Spring concert at the end of March. We are accompanied by a small orchestra and hire professional soloists. For the second half of our concerts we perform a selection of seasonal and popular music.

Previous works we have performed include Carmina Burana, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Rutter’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Brahm’s Requiem, Dvorak’s Mass in D and Fauré’s Requiem.

We rehearse every Wednesday night from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Presbyterian College, 3495 rue University (corner of Milton). [ see on Google Maps ] Registration has closed for the current semester, but we hope to see anyone and everyone at our concert on April 11th! (See Concert Info)

How do I join MCS?

Though registration has closed for the current semester, we encourage anyone interested to come out to our concert to see what we’re about. We will have a new round of registration in September, at which point you can come visit us at a rehearsal (see above). If you know you want to join, you can register right away. If you’re not sure if MCS is for you, you can leave a $5 deposit to borrow music for the rehearsal and if you don’t want to stay you will get a refund when you return the music. If you like what you hear, the deposit will go towards the price of registration. If you want to register right away, you can avoid the lineups by filling out your registration form ahead of time. Click here to view and print out a registration form.

How much does it cost to register?

Fees for registration are $25 for students and $40 for non-students. The fees help pay for the cost of the music and the many costs associated with the concert (rentals, musicians, etc.). Registration will take place just before 7:30 p.m. for the first few weeks of rehearsal, after which time the executive will have to approve the late registration.
